Pulitzer Prize winner Nilo Cruz adapted Nobel Prize winner Gabriel GarcÃa Márquez’ short story into this play for young audiences. The magical tale takes place in an impoverished town close to the Caribbean Sea. Brother and sister Fefé and Momó encounter a mysterious creature that has fallen from the sky. At first they are afraid of him, but they soon come to believe that he is an angel who needs their help. When the adults in the village discover the creature, he becomes a symbol of what they want or need him to be: an angel and a curiosity, an answer to prayers and a moneymaking sideshow freak.
Performed in two acts, A Very Old Man with Enormous Wings, explores how poverty and greed can contaminate human behavior and celebrates the importance and power of children’s faith and imagination.
