Exciting news! We have partnered with BMI for our second annual Official SXSW Showcase, which will take place Wednesday, March 17th 2010 at Mi Casa Cantina in downtown Austin. Since its St Patrick’s Day, we’ve dubbed the show Verde Wednesday, and ages 18 and over are open to witness the awesome performances and indulge in the best tamales in town.
Maluca, Volovan, Vicente Gayo, Palenke Soultribe, Maneja Beto, and La Santa Cecilia, will all be performing live, representing our hand-picked selection of Latin music’s freshest batch of new voices. What better occasion to have them all together than at South By Southwest Music Conference and Festival?

Born Natalie Yepez in the Lower East Side and raised in the Bronx, Maluca exploded at SXSW last year after wowing the demanding crowds of the Levis Fader Fort and the Mad Decent afterparty (us included.) We’re thrilled to have Maluca headline our showcase this year. Her catchy techno merengue tracks, fierce style and fun attitude have made her a sensation at underground clubs around the US and even Europe. Quoth thee: “Keep your eyes open and platanos peeled for the self-proclaimed “1/2 dominican 1/2 Pain in the ass”.”

Their eponymous 2002 debut marked a new era in Mexican rock, and now the group is back with their latest album Hogar, written in Chalo, Gerardo and Bruno‘s homes and then recorded at Draco Rosa‘s Phantom Vox Studios in Los Angeles. This is Volovan’s second SXSW appearance and have a lot of exciting projects in 2010.

One of Mexico’s newest indie sensations! This band is formed by members of the defunct Meet Your Feebles, who have created a dance and energy-heavy alternative to the usual straight rock-punk outfits of Mexico City. The cleverly-named Vicente Gayo will be touring around the US after their Remezcla.com/BMI SXSW performance and then will be part of Mexico’s prestigious Vive Latino Festival.

These Colombians (two from Bogotá and one from Popayá) have been based in Southern Cali for 4 years now, infusing their electronic music with layered Afro-Colombian rhythms and beats. Just last year, Palenke released their critically acclaimed album Oro, which includes collaborations by Cesar Pliego (Kinky), Sr.Mendez, and Locos Por Juana.
Go on at 9pm
Maneja Beto like to mix traditional cumbia and traditional guitar with rock influenced by heavy listening of The Smiths, Radiohead and Cafe Tacvba. After a few months inactive, these Austinites are ready for action and will be releasing a new 4-song EP titled Tragedias during SXSW week.
La Santa Cecilia
Los Angeles, CA
Hit the stage at 8pm
This 6-piece band lives to blend: bolero, cumbia, jazz, Afro-Cuban, norteño, tango, and bossa nova are all part of the La Santa Cecilia sound. And onstage, the result is also fiery: unstoppable dancing ensues and lead singer La Marisoul is a force to be reckoned with.
