The film Besouro in its North American Premiere through the Miami International Film Festival is a cross between the Matrix and Crouching tiger Hidden Dragon.
One of the biggest Brazilian cinematic productions ever made, this martial arts action flick by accomplished writer-director-producer João Daniel Tikhomiroff and set in 1920s Bahia tells the “true story” of a legendary capoeira fighter. Nicknamed “Besouro Mangangá,” after a big black beetle which cannot fly, he is given this moniker because of his ability to quickly vanish whenever he is faced with an uneven fight. Soon, because of his sizeable strength and notoriety, a myth is born attributing supernatural powers to him which supposedly allow him to dodge bullets and turn himself into a beetle at will. Besouro desperately ponders and seeks his true mission in life and uses his considerable physical prowess and the influence of his animist religion Candomblé to battle harsh conditions which plague his people, the oppressed black population of northern Brazil.
